Over the past three years as Stoneback Sisters & Stoneback Brass, we have had the honor and privilege to meet many wonderful people. Students, teachers, professionals and novelists all working and enjoying music and art as a lifestyle. We have learned so much from so many that we thought it would be fun to highlight some of the individuals in the pages of a magazine. It is our hope that the chronicles from our travels will bring enthusiasm and encouragement through the stories of the people we have met. As Stoneback Brass Trumpet Quartet, we perform a piece called, “Au Soir”, (translation, the night). Written by George Enescu and Edited by Leonid Chumov. At the end of this work, Enescu calls for a mute. Since it is a overall soft piece that demonstrates the flute like qualities of the trumpet, we prefer using a soft mute sound. We wanted a mute sound that would make the trumpet sound so distant and quite that people would sit at the edge of their seats and wonder how a trumpet could sound so quite. Thus, the idea of the “Au Soir” mute was born. The “Au Soir” mute represents the quite, crisp night air, a clear black night with stars splattered amongst the sky. The dark, warm sound of the mute will put your ears on notice and its exceptional response will help add musical charm to the pieces that demand it.
